Passing On A Traditional Art

In 2005 Karen Jones was awarded a Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grant titled “Apprenticeship in Traditional Dog Sled Making”.  This grant was supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.   She worked under Master Sled Builder Joel Nordholm of Tilton, NH.  Karen lives in Tamworth, NH where she owns a working Siberian Husky Kennel and where she builds traditional dog sleds, Ice Fishing Sleds and Childers Sleds. Karen’s interest in dogs and sleds was in her blood, she is the granddaughter of Hiram Mason of  Tamworth,  a veteran dog musher during the 1920's. Karen also worked under Master Dog Sled Builder Ed Moody of (Tamworth) Rochester, NH.  Moody Dog Sleds are referred to as the Stradivarius of dog sleds. Karen also inherited all of Ed Moody's sled building forms, sled patterns and a few extra parts from his daughter Roz Moody.
